I agree, and I have a pleco with this problem that was remedied by the same advice I offer, I dont need some one saying it wont work because that is all they have to offer. To the original poster, you can try whay I did. Or you can go with what another contributor read off a web site advertisement.

For once, I agree with Bob, don't use Melafix, it's nothing but snake oil in a pretty package.

I personally, would do nothing as it will heal up quickly in a few days so long as the fish is healthy. Keep an eye on it, if it looks like it's getting infected with anything, add the salt.

Dont use any of the melacrap.QUOTE]

Yes, because it is a really great product that is easy to use, tolerated by all fish (included scaleless) and wont disrupt your biological filtration...Melaleuca (the active ingredient) has been proven to be a useful antiseptic and antibacterial agent. It is excellent for keeping wounds clean while they heal.

As far as your pleco goes, i have seen this before...I had one that used to do it from time to time, i think it has something to do with him growing...I really wouldnt worry too much about it...You should see them starting to heal in a few days...Severe spilts all the way to the body may not heal up perfectly, but they will definitly improve.

There are several reasons for pleco to get holes/tears.

Stress can cause problems - like if they are housed with aggressive fish (maybe because the aggressive fish attach him  )

Water problems can cause issues.

Growing can cause issues.

etc... Untill we get more details on the problem - we will never be able to determine what EXACTLY is the solution. Certain problems take certain solutions.

IME, when I have had this problem, it heals up quickly (no more than 3 days) with no action taken. My cause however is because they are housed with aggressive cichlids who have nothing better to do :D

As for Melaleuca (or what ever it is), I have never added anything to my tank including medication and salt - so I have no experience.

Good Luck

Settle down folks... I have kept plecos, I have had this problem many times, and I have always had good resolution. If it's not infected, if it's just a clean tear, keep your water quality as perfect as you can and wait. No need to add salt, which can really mess up some things in a tank. No need to medicate it which can harm other things. Just give him a few weeks, and keep a really close eye on his fin. If he's healthy, and no infection is present, and he's eating well... he'll heal. I've gotten tatters moving my plec's, I've seen it happen from them tusseling for position on the zuchinie, and sometimes, just because they had a big growth spurt. It looks horrible, and I'm sure it's not so nice for the fish, but it's pretty normal. No need to panic, just keep him clean and keep him fed and don't stress him out with any additives untill you see signs of infection. If he's healthy, and your tank is clean, he'll heal right up.

I want to add that even though i have never used Melafix for fish (i have been lucky and not needed it), the active ingredient is tea tree oil (if i am remembering correctly from previous discussions), which i have used on myself a number of times with good results. it does work - it's not snake oil.
