Pleco help

1. your cichlids are probably going to pick on any pleco you get.
2. any pleco big enough to defend itself is going to be FAR too big for a 45g tank.
3. hypostomus punctuatus will eventually reach 18-20++ inches, too big for a 45. get rid of it while it is still small but before its eyes are eaten out by the cichlids. they can't get through the 'armor' but the eyes are vulnerable.

What size Pleco would you recomend for my tank.
size 'zero' and take back the one you've got before your african cichlids kill it outright. what chicken said.

I'd go with a gravel vac. Most bottom feeders don't really clean the tank anyways....catfish need feeding as well. They will clean up some leftover food, but really they aren't necessary. Just don't overfeed and do regular maintenance and you shouldn't have a messy bottom. :)

plecos don't belong in goldfish tanks, either. goldfish need temperate water, plecos are tropical. just bring it back and clean your own tank.

So i took back the Pleco and got a pictus cat
now why did you do that? your africans are probably going to pick on it, too, and they don't really do any cleanup, which seems to be your only reasoning for buying a fish like that. the only cafish that can live with africans satisfactoraly IMO are synodontis catfish, since they come from the same area as your africans do. please listen to us prior to buying fish and don't do it on a whim.
