I just purchased a new pleco from my lfs. It was identified as a hi-fin red pleco, but I'm always doubtful of their identification. Anyways I checked all my fish books for the correct i.d. but couldn't find it. It is very similar to glyptoperichys gibbiceps but the spot pattern on the dorsal fin is random. If anyone has any idea or can point me in the direction of a good source of information I'd appreciate it.

Thanks Reiner, what an invaluable site for catfish lovers! I went through all the pictures and descriptions on the family loricariidae but I wasn't able to find an exact match. I'm still pretty sure that it is a sail-fin pleco. It's almost an exact minature version of the adult, except for the colour which is brown with a red tint on the fins. I guess I'll just have to wait for it to grow more to see if its colour changes. Thanks again Reiner.

Here a pic of my sailfin, you can compare it with yours..mine has some reddish brown in its fins

I checked all the L numbers clayt101 and it seemed to take forever, I only have dial-up. The little guy looks very similar to Berger's but his spot pattern is denser. Its colour has deepened in the last couple of days. Its spots are a dark brown on a base colour of light brown with almost yellow on the leading edges of is dorsal and pectoral fins. Towards the center of all its fins and its tail is a definite red shading. The body structure is definitely that of a sail-fin pleco but its colouration isn't, maybe the differences are juvenille markings. Thanks for the picture Berger, that's a nice looking fish.

There are several varieties of gibbiceps. Yours sounds like it might be the one that is sometimes called a Colombian Spotted Pleco. Try doing a google search for it, you should find some pics.

planetcatfish also has an excellent forum for catfish, and for a small fee (j/k! :D ) will identify the catfish...... just post a picture in the right forum, they have some really excellent catfish guys there (of course).
