pleco identification help please

These two "adults" were the only pleco in the tank.

The sub was brought new, so no way the their was another pleco transferred when we put the sub in.

I agree i cant see how a common and BN can breed. Makes no sense.

So in my 3ft (which I 100% know their is no other fish or pleco as I set up and cycled it and these are the only fish to go in (as of yesterday)) we have 2 adults pleco and 2fry. I am now cycling a 2ft which I will move the fry to once thats ready in a month. So I then have 2 tanks. with 2 pleco in. 1 tank is fry and the tank is adults who bred. I have the submarine in there now and I placed a few more pleco breeding caves in there.

My friend brought the sub new, when I went to get some more cherry barbs he bought the sub as cave for his pleco. I laughed because the sub is 2 ft long and I was like NO! You need caves which are slightly bigger than the pleco and he was adament it was the sub or a helicopter both at 2ft! The sub was £7 cheaper, I am absolutetly confused how these guys choose it as a cave. but then it was the only cave like thing in his tank.

Without knowing the species I dont know how to induce the spawning season with them.

With my BN's I give them 3 days of good feed, do a huge water change 60%, add 30% RO water and usually breeding commences.

Maybe I should try induce spawning season for these guys? But how without knowing what they are? Any suggestions?

Oh something else I noticed.

The brown one does NOT come out when their is light. If the tank light is on then he is no where to be seen! If I catch him as the light comes on his fin goes down and he shots into the submarine. Is this behaviour trait to any other pleco?

You need to get it out of your mind that these plecos ever bred together.

It is just not possible. Trying to figure out a spawning season for something that does not happen is like trying to prove a negative.

Those babies were introduced from somewhere else. Either your friend had another male BN pleco in his tank that you don't know about or the babies were introduced from something else. Maybe you are being pranked?

Also most plecos are nocturnally active and normally hide during the day. The behaviour of the Common pleco is not unusual.

I see in your post that you are breeding BN's already in a different tank. Is it possible some moved from one tank to the other with a piece of decor that was moved from one tank to the next?

My BN's have not been mixed with these two at all and its impossible for them to of ever had. These two have only been in my house 24 hours. Their in a brand new 3ft cycled tank which has never seen another fish. (Bye bye angel fish tank!)

I Just cant get my head around..

Why would these choose a 2 ft submarine as a cave? as all other pleco breed in caves similar to their own size, How can a common (If it is a common) breed at this size when it'd still be a baby. itself. How can a BN and a common breed in the first place! Its not possible in my eyes.

I am tempted to put the albino female with my albino male in a spare tank alone and see what happens. But then Im also tempted to leave the two be in the 3 ft for a few months and see what happens.

They chose the submarine probably because there was a lack of other caves for them to hide in. Hiding doesn't always mean breeding. It's just normal behavior for most plecos.

Did you happen to bring any decor to your friend from your tanks where you were breeding plecos?

Nope :(

Ive been running through my head to see if their is any possible way a 3rd pleco being involved and there isnt.

All his ornaments where new, He didnt have live plants, He brough plastic off amazon.
His gravel again was new.

Got more..

Since it is such a point of contention over what is and isn't, why not leave the two together and see what happens?

I think thats the only answer. Give them a year and see how fry grows, see if parents breed again, see how much parents grow.

Just keep a full document on it all
