I opted away from slate thinking the O would just butcher himself up more than usual. These two fish have lived together for 4 years and sometimes it looks like a death match inside the tank (ever see a plec chase an oscar?) so this is my solution to keep damages to a minimum. I considered finding a new home for the plec, but he does such a good job of glass cleaning, its just amazing. (Sunday I moved the heater and filter hoses, revealing a 3 inch wide algae scum line. Within an hour the glass was clean! I even took a picture since many people say big plec's don't clean glass as when they were tiny.)
Thanks all for the ideas. For now, I'm sticking with the zero cost solution.
