I have some pleco's that are doing somthing odd, they are doing what I would call floundering, they swim Upsidown on the surface of the water with their mouths stickin out, It makes it easier to feed them little bits of potato but is this normal for them? Kinda goofy I guess

I used to have one who did the same thing.

I left for school one day and he was floating upside down on the surface, I thought he was dead!! I was late for school (this was in 1994) so I didnt scoop him out. I got home and he was still in the same spot. I opened the lid and went to scoop him and he swam away. I was STUNNED!

kinda scary that they do that

In a LFS near my mom's house, the plecos do that trick when the goldfish in the same tank are fed with floating sticks.

my mom's convinced there's somthing wrong, she woke me up about 3 in the morning to see what they were doing, I blanched a small section of potato, fed them and they went about doing their own thing

I have a small pleco and he absolutely loves to do it. I notice he was doing it when I was feeding some of my other fish flake food. He just came to the top and suctioned a good amount of the food in before going back to his resting place on the side of the tank.

Bizarre but SO cool to watch.

Oh and btw I as worried about his nutrition so I got him some sinking food and he's not interested in the flakes anymore. I wonder if anyone had a movie of their pleco doing this. I have a friend studying animal behaviour and she really wanted to see a pleco in action doing this particular maneouver.

Thanks!
