Plecos at Low PH

I'm not sure the store would do that for you. The last BN you got....was in the the LFS for a week or so?

I'd go much, much slower with the acclimation process. First dicus I received shipped freaked me out since they were coming from 7.0, water in the shipping bag usually drops in ph a bit, and mine is 7.6-7.8. I drip acclimated those babies all day and all night!

I have raised an awful lot of bn over the years and shipped out hundreds to new homes. My tap is pH 7.4 and GH 6. The only time I ever had a buyer/recipient lose the entire batch was when a lady put them into pH 6.0. It is too low for bn imo. Look to be 6.5 and up for them to be happy.

Hey, I'm also in NYC (Queens) and haven't lost a single Pleco. I received 3 2" Calico Plecos from meili.harrison here on AC and they are doing great. My PH out of the tap is 6.8, but 6.6 in my 20g tank because of the Driftwood. I didn't even drip acclimate them (although I realize I should have), just floated the bag for twenty minutes and netted them into the tank. They are healthy as can be. They even survived an ick outbreak in my tank about a month after they arrived that heavily affected them and the neon tetras.

Your LFS may carry a good stock and keep healthy fish for the most part, but maybe the Plecos they are getting just aren't that great. What store is this btw? I might want to check it out.

Have you considered raising your pH and hardness a bit? A little bit of crushed coral or a couple seashells in the tank would do it gradually enough for the fish to adjust, and would make it easier to add new stock after it's raised.

Thanks guys, I am not going to play with my PH, tried that 3 yrs a go. What a pain. My tank is stable and that is the best thing for the fish.
I have Angels doing their thing every other week and the GBRs are having fun all over the place. The Ottos are very active and the plants are doing Ok. Have some large DW.
I do weekly water changes, Prime, the works, main thing is to keep water super clean, I think the PH is less of a problem and I can live without a pleco if that is the case.
The reason that I was going to get the BN pleco was to get some algae of my glass, but as i was told that is a tall order even for the BN, so we will keep Mag-floats (someone should give the inventor a Life achievement price LOL)
Meili does have great stuff!
