possible?
not a heavy salt tanks, but it would be brackish. can Plecos handle it?
if not, what do you suggest?

I think common plecos are so hardy, they would be able to take it. However, they get too large for most home aquaria.

There aren't too many brackish bottom feeding scavengers (for example, gobies are bottom feeders but really aren't scavengers). You might be better off with nerite snails and maybe fiddler crabs. My molly actually eats almost anything off the bottom! And I have heard of some people using those as "bottom feeders" or clean up crew in brackish setups.

Malaysian Trumpet Snails (MTS) are much cheaper then nerites and more readily available. They make a great clean up crew but be aware that they reproduces like rabbits. They mostly hide in the gravel and will not be a nuisance even if they are heavily populated.

that's right, forgot about those!

For fish, I just remembered the Columbian shark catfish, but those are in the same size range as common plecos, as they get to about a foot or longer.

no! plecos are pretty hardy, but salt is one thing they are sensitive to. it can quickly stress them, even if you're only using aquarium salt short-term as an ich treatment

clean the gravel yourself.

correct, plecos can withstand a treatment dose of salt but that's about their limit. If a pleco is left long term in a salted environment of the slightest, you will notice their skin being to palen and then it's just a matter of time before they are afflicted with something which could potentially lead to their demise.

Bad idea. Your best bet would be fiddler crabs if you do not have puffers and have as space for them to get out of the water. Other than that, make you sure you do your water changes regularly. Do not get Arius catfish because they do not eat algae, they are predators.
