Pleco's sucking Channel Cats to DEATH!!

I put some Zucchinni in and left it over night. They didn't touch the stuff. In the morning, I went out for a while and when I came back, a quarter of it was gone but I'm not sure who was the diner. I'll put some more in tonight and see what happens. Usually, how long does it take for them to recognize the Zuchinni?

every healthy pleco I've had figured out zuccini within a day or two. Once they get a taste for it they will get ferocious about eating it. Mine drive all other fish away from the zuccini when it's in the tank.

Last night was the second night in a row that I've put Zuchinni in and they haven't touched it. I attached it to a clip in a covered area of the tank and stuck it to the glass. I'm going to try Zuchinni one more time tonight and if they don't touch it again, I'm not going to keep wasting money buying the disgusting Zuchinni and they won't eat it. I have cucumbers too and I'll put that in along with the Zuchinni tonight to see what happens. I noticed that even with the zuch in there, I'm still having to beat them off of the Channel cat.

You might try adding some garlic, in any form except garlic salt, to the water before poaching your zuchini. That acts as an appetite stimulant for plecos, and will help them to recognize it as food. Once they try it, they should forego sucking on your fish entirely.

It's pretty clear if the plecos have been eating zuchini. They rasp furrows in the flesh and skins. I hope this helps...

Do you feed shrimp pellets (bottom feeder wafers) or brine shrimp on occasion? Just curious as the pleco's may be lloking for protein directly and not just food in general. I am only going on some things I've read, but I do know that my pleco's have always gone after brine shrimp and bottom feeder wafers as well.

Another theory I have is that they just haven' caught on to changing their behavior. The catfish have been the source of food, and they may need some retrain time.

I bought some sinking shrimp pellets on Sunday. I've been throwing some in every other night at lights out since. I haven't seen them actually eat the pellets but they are gone in the morning. I may separate them in the tank with a divider so that their food stays in one place exclusively.

I thought about a divider also to let your channel cat have a rest and possibly help break the sucking habit. don't know if it will work, but temporary seperation may help.
