I agree on the farlowella being an awesome fish. We have a twig fish farlowella who is about 7 inches now and really enjoy him.
There are also the bushy/bristle nose pleco. They stay really small 4-5 inches I think. We have a albino bushy nose. He is a homely little dude but sweet! I also have a peppermint pleco who is really pretty. He is shy but sweet and will max out around 6-8 inches.
If I could have any kind of pleco it would definately be a zebra pleco. They are just gorgeous but not in my budget.
I would avoid all the commons. They get just way too huge and are super messy. I don't know how big a tank you are talking about but if it isn't a couple hundred gallons, I doubt they could be housed appropriately.
