I would like to put a plecostomus in my new 38g tank, but I do not know of many different species. The common Hypostomus would grow too large for my tank, as it is 36" long by 12" wide. I am looking for something that would max out at 5-7 inches. It would go in with a few clown loaches and a large school of cardinal tetras.

clown loached Eventually get a foot long though too, they grow slow, but still get huge, Zebra would be a good one maybe someone can suggest others?
I saw a butterfly pleco at a local fish store the other day. It was gorgeous. I wanted it!! It would not work for my new tank. 
I bet it would be fine with your peaceful fish, though. It gets to be around the same size as a bristlenose I believe.

"butterfly plecos" are not plecos, they are a type of coldwater loach which feeds on algae, needs cool water with a high current, and a lot of oxygen in the water.
GK, are you talking about a zebra loach for the OP to buy or a zebra pleco? probably he doesn't want to spend $200++ on one fish. a bristlenose, rubberlip, or clown pleco would fit into that tank. clowns (panaque sp.) need driftwood to eat.

The pictures really don't do it justice; it was a really good looking fish!
ah, well then. sometimes you can find those on ebay.
too many LFS's label the hillstreams as butterfly plecos and people come away very misinformed.
