plecostumus in my african tank

Do you all have a recommendation on how to get the food to the pleco? I haven't found the trick for getting any type of food product to my bushynose. The mbuna eat everything that I've tried to put in there for him. The algae wafers are eaten in a blizzard of fish and food debris. Same goes for any veggie.

I had the same problem in my tank. That's why I started to feed my pleco when the tank and the room are in total darkness, as I said before. After 5 months with my mbunas, he is looking good; so, he has to be eating well enough. Also, I have a good piece of driftwood in the tank; something important as stated by Coler and mostlycichlids.

Well said efors..

Yep i find it rather difficult to feed bottom feeders when there are some fishy lawn mowers present as well, a good rule to follow is that when the lights have been out for a while and your regular day feeders are asleep or motionless would be the best time to chuck in some foods for the plec's.

Pleco's are nocturnal by nature and when you see them out during lighted periods is that their pretty much hungry and hunting for morsals.

Good luck buddy..

Thanks for the info! I have a "common" plecostumus in my tank. In that tank I have a large piece of driftwood, along with all of the rockwork. The food that I feed my fish has spirilina listed in the ingredients, but I will buy some spirilina food to feed as well. I do feed my fish romaine lettuce, but I am not sure if he has been eating that.

It should in means that it would love to eat it but you never know how an animal reacts to their needs in all with food stuffs.. I know snails love romaine lettuce..

As for the spirulina in the list ingredients, i find the ones where it lists the spirulina ingredient first to make sure i am feeding a true high in spirulina count, some of the crap out there is nothing more than fish meal with just a tab bit veggie, thats why i feed HBH super veggie 8 and omega one super veggie high in spirulina counts..

Wafers i use are wardleys spirulina disks and is the no. ingredient with spirulina..

Take care buddy..

If you don't mind doing a large order over the internet Ken's fish food is excellent. They have a spirlina, garlic, paprika flake food that is excellent. Since we have started feeding it to our cichlids we havn't had any sickness break out. It is also cheaper in the long run but more expensive in the short run. We have been using it since june and have used maybe one pound (this flake is feed to all our fish, 12 tanks worth) and we ordered like 7, it is going to last for a while.

As for feeding the pleco...

After dark is usually what works the best, you can always weigh the zuccini or whatnot down with a spoon to make sure that it stays on the bottom where the pleco can get at it. don't be supprised if the mumba's wake up and still attack the food though....

There are also different options to keeping a pleco in with the africans. There are a few different catfish that are native to the African lakes that would fit in well, the synodontis, petricolas and brichardii's are a few that i can think of off the top of my head. while they are much more expensive than the common pleco they would be a much better fit IMHO. Good luck!

Ken's Fish Food

My first post. I order all my fish food & supplies from Ken's Fish.

I like the idea of supporting the small business man. You can even call him & talk to a real person. His prices are usually better than Big Al's & the other big online fish sites. I got a Rena XP3 for $40 bucks cheaper than all the other sites.
