Sorry about the title, just trying to grab some interest. Get a lot of mixed reviews when I ask about UGF and plenums in saltwater setups. Some say the UGF in SW is a out dated? From what I have researched many DIY plenums work very well but really have no idea which would be a better choice.

Maybe some kind of reverse flow UGF?

Isnt a plenum just an UGF with more open space? Not sure what mean but they seem similiar. Also What kind of substrate would you use with an UGF? Crushed Coral or nothing?

From what I understand: "Plenums create a dead water space area under the substrate. This dead water space, along with the substrate, help in the denitrification process which lower the nitrates."

Taken from www.garf.org which I find has some really great info on keeping reef tanks. as well as a calculater for building any size plenum with detailed instructions.

Well I was just looking to get a good thread started and figured I would let some the old and new schoolers kick this topic around. I know it has probably been debated here in the past but it doesnt hurt to give life to an discussion, right?

Also looking to find out how methods that were used in the past (60's, 70's, 80's) earlier or later, trying to find out how some filters of the past evolved to todays filters.

Hope this gets everybody posting, thanks again.
