I have built a durso standpipe for the output line to my sump, my fish keep swimming down it so I went and bought a strainer to cover the 1.25" intake. But when I got the strainer it is one inch so I had to buy a reducing bushing to make it fit. When I put it on the tank I overflow started to fill up as if the intake was clogged. Is there any way to fix it?

Is your durso behind an overflow?

Yup....logical question....a standpipe should always be behind a weir, of fashions....this then removes the need to put a strainer on the standpipe..

The reason your experiencing this, is because your reducing the flow..

the person I bought the tank from decided to cut where the overflow grid was out. So i have covered the hold with gutter guard and i have ottos and snails that keep find their way into the sump.

I think your problem is the teeth on your overflow/weir arn't big enough to stop the fish getting past.
There are no teeth i has a piece of gutter covering ment to keep leaves out. I had to use some cause the teeth have been cut out by the person i bought it from.
