Plywood tank - redux

Yeah, I had a post about the setup over on RC, and the only real recommendation I got was "get the biggest skimmer you can afford". Problem is, the only real place to fit one would be outside the tank stuck back in the corner there, and there isn't a whole lot of room. that and after buying the pumps and a bunch of true-union ball valves, there isn't going to be much fundage left for a skimmer lol. I've been mulling using high-power LEDs to light the tank, and I'm trying to figure out how I can use a few to light up a vertical turf scrubber as well back there. The only problems I have are keeping the LEDs dry back there, and how far they would stick out from the wall after they are attached to a heat sink.

So its only been about 3 months...and I'm finally getting around to painting it. Did the first coat last night, getting ready for the second coat now. I was originally planning on redoing the back area with the MAS epoxy resin, but I had so much paint left over from the first batch I mixed I ended up painting the back too. I'm mixing about half that this time...the whole tank should end up with about 3 coats. That is on top of 3 or 4 coats of the epoxy that was originally in there. I'm just so glad to finally be making some progress with this build.

wow that looks great!

Very Nice!

No, I haven't gotten the LEDs yet, but I won't be using the low-power 5mm LEDs, I'll use most likely either Crees or Luxeon Rebels, high-output LEDs.

Its still got a ways to go before I'm able to put fish in it. I've got to drill the tank, get the pumps and the plumbing, get the sand, put in the sand and base rock....still a ways to go.

One other thing I'm mulling though is plumbing this to my reef tank which is upstairs and using it like a remote sump. I can run the drain line down into the sump area and use a separate return pump to push water back up. Not having the sump on the reef tank has made it so much quieter, I love it but I miss the filtration and options it was giving me...just not the noise and the mess.

Looks great Matt. You really know what you're doing. I can't wait to see what the final tank looks like.
