I just put my 2 guppies into the 10 gallon ... still cycling, week 3 ... I will add more fish in about 2 weeks.

I was just going to return the 5 gallon hex ... but then again I thought maybe I could put 1 betta in it.

Should I just return it and never again go smaller than 10 g???? :dance2:

I have a 5G with a betta, a bamboo shrimp (I know he will outgrow the tank, i hav bigger tanks he can move to) and a bunch of live plants (I bought betta bulbs from petco out of curiosity and dropped them in the tank, they look pretty cool now and grow very fast!) The tank looks very nice and I leave it on an end table in my living room. I am a big fan of the small tanks, they can be really cool when done nicely and can be displayed in places that just won't fit a bigger tank.

If I were in your place, I'd go for a planted betta tank. But then again, the hospital/quarantine tank idea is good as well. I think youre gonna have to decide yourself :dance2:

First off guppygal--don't add any more fish until your cycling is complete. You are already compromising your guppies' health by putting them through 1 cycle, putting them through a 2nd mini cycle would really be pushing things. Wait until your ammonia and nitrites register 0 before you add anymore fish (this could take 3 weeks or more) and then do so very slowly. IMO you could add 2 or maybe 3 more guppies maximum. If you add all 3 at once, you may see a mini cyle (ammonia or nitrite spike) which could be dangerous.

Regarding returning the 5 g--a betta would do OK in a 5 (bit small though), or a few tiny male endlers might enjoy that size of tank. However, it's always good to have a back up (spare) tank that you can set up in case one of your fish get sick and need to be quarantined and medicated. You don't want to medicate the whole tank, so a QTank is good to have.

I returned it and used the $50 toward my new stand for the 10g.

If I need a sick tank - I have buckets that I only use for changing fish water I could use.

It's pretty hard to see your fish's health condition when it's in a bucket.
