So for a short period I was into making model cars and went out and bought all this polystyrene tubing in varying sizes. I don't make model cars anymore, but now I have all this tubing.

So my question is, is it ok to put some holes in the tubing, stick a plastic tube to it, seal it with aquarium safe glue, and hook it up to my air pump?

Will polystyrene be able to withstand being in warm water?

Is there more to a diffuser that I'm missing?

I'd say do a Google search for aquarium safe materials, but my guess is that it's safe - you can use polystyrene to make back walls for tanks, so it should be okay.
It sounds like you're basically going to create your own bubble wall - you'll need to find a way to weigh it down or use suction cups to stick it to the tank wall, otherwise it will float up, but the effect will be very nice.
