i'm very interested to own some Pomacea canaliculata snails (the type that grow to the baseball size or larger). i need to learn how to care and house these snails.

any suggestions? how many gallons would be suitable for a snail? what should i feed? since this kind of snail, the live plants will be gone in a short time.. could it survive with just algae wafers and some green veggies? will plastic plants be okay for it?

if anyone has some pictures of their own snails - POST IT! :)

Try www.applesnail.net. Tons of good info on poms...I have a nice collection of Brig snails that I really adore, but have yet to step up to the true Apple Snail...Check out Aquabid.com if you are looking for apples :)

Personally I think snails are sort of ignored, seen as more of a nusaince then a benefit...I only got into them a few months ago and find myself observing them more and more each day...My "brig" (that is pushing tennis ball size) has become one of my favorites..EXTREMELY acitve and even comical at times...

They will destroy a planted tank and will eat almost anything. I feed mine a variety of frozen foods (california mix frozen veggies) zucchini, algae wafers and what ever other greens I have in the fridge...

Snails are pretty undemanding...About the only real concern is your water hardess..Snails need those disolved minerals to produce hard shells...If your water is soft, you can add a "cuttle bone" to the tank...That will give them the calcium they need...

I keep the snail tank bare for easy cleaning...They get a vaccum and a partial water change every 3 days or so...They can be REALLY messy, but with good tank maintenance they are not hard to keep clean.

Here are a few pics of my snails... Enjoy!http://themightyqueenpixie.tripod.com/snails/

your snails look good. i have 3 same snails as yours. they're fun to watch, too. i'm having high hopes that one of my snails may be pregnant because it looked like it was mated with another one - for hours and hours. if not... aww, oh well. i have been feeding them some algae wafers and there are some plants (snails have yet gotten them) and some fish flake leftovers. there are some algae on their shells since when i bought them - is it normal? it won't hurt them? i know that they're algae eaters but i just want to make sure. heh.

i hope i used the correct image tags!

yellow one was following the black one... i just knew it was going to do something about the black snail.

was it either chomping or mating the poor black snail? LoL. this black snail spent a lot of time isolating itself on the wall - below the surface and i wonder if it is okay???? i also have about 25 red ramhorn snails that aren't in the photos on above and i love them.

anyways, i was on the applensail.net and many other sites but they didn't have much infromation specifically about canaliculata snails, only common snails. :( i have a spare ten gallon tank and i thought i'd find if it would be suitable for a canaliculata or two. is it kinda small?

Wow, a snail that grows that large, yikes..

That pic looked like "snail sex" to me....The female will lay eggs above the water line so be sure to leave an inch or two for her....Algae on their shells will not hurt them, and you will often see them "grazing" on each other. The "rule of thumb" is 2.5 gals of water for mature brigs...An adult apple will probably require atleast 10 gals...Happy snail keeping :)
