Pond construction, from dreams to reality!

Where's north?

The area for pond on left side of pic. is that for future pond?

The media in a friends pond is a good idea. There are strains of cold water BB that will colonize this fall and then next spring for you to add too your pond. You could even spike his pond next spring with a cold water liquid BB additive to futher add BB to your media. It is good to about 50 deg. Once water temps. hit 60 deg. thats when the BB need to be present in your pond to really get to work.

Whoops I meant to add the directions but I was in a rush, sorry. North is right.

Yes open area to the left is for a future pond. When experience and budget allow.

We were going to fill up the pond today and finish in the spring but we just can't seem to stop. :) We have decided to make stairs off the deck to our new mini deck so I made a new diagram. Still working out the waterfall, trying to fit a bog in there while not looking at the back of it and having it enter into the pond directly across from the skimmer.

I got an idea for the bog! I will check it out tomorrow and let you guys know!! WooHoo!

Do you have any idea how lucky you are? I was trying to figure out what was "wrong" with your pond hole, and then it came to me...

When I leveled (no digging, just leveling!) a 10' circle for my above ground little pond, my dirt pile looked more like your new rock pile :) And your dirt looks more like the sand I bought to smooth out the top layer. I have never seen a hole more than an inch deep that didn't have melon-sized rocks, sticks, bits of long-buried stumps, and who-knows-what-else sticking out of the sides. I AM SO JEALOUS!! Just to do the veggie garden last spring left me a pile of rock 3' high and about 15' long!

Can't wait to see what I dig up when I can finally build THE pond...probably at least one old car down there somewhere :)

:lol2: I know it's not funny though, sorry. My father digs wells for a living and has said that the dirt in our yard is the easiest dirt he has ever dug in. There are only small round pebbles within the first foot than it is all super soft (damp) sand.

Were any of the rocks you dug up useful?

Bog doesn't need to be above ground and unsightly. It just needs to be a little higher than the finished pond water level. It can also be basically just a small pond built right next to the main pond. Some flexable PVC into the bottom of the bog, a snorkel/vault system, or just a bulk head going into the bog.

Is the downspout in the second pic. going to be re-routed around the house. I say this because the water from it may try to seep behind the liner and cause hydrostatic pressure, on more reason for gravel on the bottom.:grinno:

Your pops does good work and looks like he has pitched the soil nicely away form the pond.

Any thoughts on stepping the sloped wall closest to the A/C?

Because of the incline in the ground where the downspout comes out all runoff should run the other way. If it doesn't we can easily move it around.

As far as stepping the wall we don't really want it. If the pond is completely filled the low end would be 3ft and any adult could get out if they fell. NO children are ever unsupervised in my yard, if we go out with any kids they don't even see that side of the yard and we are with them ALL the time because my mom is a worry wart! I also have nearly no neighbors so there are no wandering kids. All the kids around me are grown too.

Here is the idea for the bog, so simple I can't believe it took me this long to think of it! The waterfall will face slightly right, the bog will run along the edge of the pond and spill in directly across from the skimmer. There is more room there than my drawing shows. With this setup I should also be able to run the liner in one complete piece for everything, waterfall, bog and all.

You could try to use the one piece of liner, but if not, just go buy another piece. This way you can make the bog deeper. The bog plants should recieve plenty of morning sun on that corner. If you are growing veggies only 12' or so away, that spot is getting enough sun.

With the threat of no kids going swimming, I have a feeling that spot is going to be remodeled in a few years.

And back to the steps... They don't have to be that big, not a whole shelve running the lenght of the side or anything, (but that would be nice)... It just needs to be at the point on the side by the A/C. Right now it is a step yes, a 3 footer. And yes anybody could get out, but not without trashing the landscaping/rockscaping along the edge. Ladder time?
