Sam, how big is the pond and are there any fish in it? If it's small and no fish present, the best and surest way is to empty the pond, at least below the filter to check for leaks around the water intake seal\lining. Is your water level dropping noticably?

How do you find a pond leak when the pond is already setup?
Fill pond...turn off all pumps and close all valves to piping. Does the pond still lose water? If not the problem is not in the pond itself. If the pond level still drops you've eliminated the piping as a leak or at least the main leak.

Then if the leak is in the pond use...cream! let the pond leak down to where it stops. Add just a bit of water and then taking an eye dropper and heavy cream go around the edge dropping a bit of cream around the edge. The cream will be drawn to the leak IF it is in the liner.

Check all piping for dampness. Cracks in piping, valves are not uncommon after winter.

No it won't.

If you have a waterfall they can often be the culprit. They can drain down a pond quite a bit and it can be hard to see where. It doesn't take much of a problem in a waterfall to make a big leak.
