Pool filter sand in the winter?

Connecticut. As for finding a pool service store, there's one within an hour of me and I'm not sure if they were just closed the day I went there or if they are closed for the season. I will do some research though.

That's too bad. I am in NJ.

If you do have to resort to shipping, 50lbs shipping is probably around $20.

Kengal...

have you tried googling "pool supplies CT" or checking the yellow pages? There appear to be many in the area.

I can't imagine you'd have to go more than 15-20 minutes to get to one...

I live way out in the country, in a section of CT that's mostly country. I may have found one though.

I have only found pool filter sand at pool/spa shops - not at Lowe's or Home Depot. Many of them close in January and February. I would call before making a drive. I live in a small town though - I would guess that in larger towns they stay open year round.

Sand is a commodity item that's too heavy to ship long distances, so it tends to be locally sourced. That's why things like "play sand" will very considerably in differing parts of the country: in some places it'll be a nice beige color, in my area it's an ugly dark grey.

It you can't find "pool filter sand" locally because it's out of season, just see if you can get another nice-looking silica sand of a suitable consistancy (pool filter sand is just silica sand of a grit that appropriate for pool filters, in very expensive packaging).

Go a local masonry/hardscape material supply yard; i.e., those places that sell brick, pavers, stone, etc. Ask for a bag of white silica sand, in the coarsest grit they have. A 100 lb. bag will probably go for $10 or so.
