pooping fish

i thought a siphon was the only legit way to do water changes.

Wardley is a crap walmart brand. feed than topfin flakes. And long stringy white poo means internal parasites. Not a good thing IMO

the poo is black, but still long and stringy

its the best way, yes.

Actually , feed them tetramin flakes and bloodworms. My fish love that brand. Just dont buy wardley

long poop is normal. my platies routienly make craps longer than their bodies, and are none the worse for wear.

May I ask what's wrong with Wardley?
i think many people consider them a "lower quality" food because they (as well as many other store brands) add fillers like wheat and soy that aren't necessary or particularly nutritious for fish. some fish even develop bloat as a result of plant material that is not especially digestible to them (especially carnivores like bettas, etc.).

but if you only feed it a couple times a week, it's probably OK. i rotate through 15 different kinds of food (including frozen, fresh, live, and human-grade foods) so any one food only gets fed once a week at most. even still, i steer clear of foods that list "fish meal" as the first ingredient. now I buy premium foods that use real, whole fish and shrimp and not "meal". Omega One is a GREAT brand and is available at Petsmart, as well as online.

how much does some of the high-quality stuff cost?

not much. I buy almost the entire line of Omega One products (shrimp pellets, Veggie Rounds, community food, betta pellets) for about $2-5 per can on petdiscounters.com. It's less than you'd pay at the store, and probably pretty comparable to anything (of less quality) you'd find at the store. Try it, I bet your fishies will love it! :)
