its amazing to see the personality of a fish once it is properly being taken care of^_^
thank you for being a responsible fish keeper and education your self, he looks wonderful and happy!
He is lucky to have a keeper like you ^_^ wee need more novice fish keepers like you. People willing to help and care for the animal they just bought..(educated at the time or not).
May the karma gods love you long time this coming year.
My betta is still doing just fine as well as my other fish despite the 2 hour power outage today. The cheap plexi hex tank has begun to see its last now. It's become quite scratched and there are these tiny amoeba looking things stuck to the glass and other surfaces. I'm not sure what they are and I can't get a really good shot of them. I ran out of the little filter cartridge for this filter so I fashioned some filter media with that blue foam stuff. What's an affordable new tank for this great betta and what could the little creatures be? Also, I don't feel as if I have been overfeeding the betta and there has been a huge increase in MTS spawning. Could they be feeding on this other organism in the tank and be multiplying rapidly due to it? Here's some so-so pictures.
I have one of these, in 2.5G that was on sale for $25. The built in filter seems OK, and the hood lets you put in a CFL (I use a 7 watt one). The filter does block out some of the light, which makes a quarter of the tank under it a bit shaded. Bad for plants, good resting place for my betta. Tank is acrylic though, so it will scratch...
Have you been to Petland in Kahala (30 mile drive from Schofield, lol...)? They have this loooooong planted tank near the front of the store, maybe 5 gallons in total. I think I did not see that sized tank for sale there, but available at the store on Ward Ave. You would have to figure out your own lighting solution though. I'd guess $80+ to set up one of those in comparison to the Petco all-in-one cheapo solution.
EDIT: If the Aqueon tank is $35, it might be a better idea to go with an Eclipse 3 for $40. I think the filtration system is superior (more out of the way, and it has a BIOWHEEL woo). Not sure how easy it is to get replacement bulbs though. There is also an Eclipse Hex for $45 if you like the hex type of tanks (plus you can stick a CFL in that one).
Thanks for the ideas. I went to a couple stores and settled for the deal at Coral Sea. I got a 5 gallon glass tank that has spots for 2 dividers (to hold 3 betta). I bought a glass top and a light that holds an incandescent light bulb which I also bought. I decided to give LFS sand a chance and bought some black marine sand that is safe for freshwater use. The sand floats at first and bubbles stick to it all over the place. It was interesting to see but I imagine the sand will soak and over time, settle. I didn't think that my filter would have a hard time fitting but it does. I had to move the sand away from the spot that the filter sits because in order for the filter to fit under the glass hood, it has to nearly be flush with the bottom of the tank. I threw in 3 little MTS and 1 ghost shrimp for tank cleaning. Here's some pictures:
Ok first of all melafix is not good for bettas it can damage the labyrinth organ . Second male betta if placed in another tank with other fish they must be peaceful not nipping fish or your betta will get tortured. I keep my male bettas in their own tanks I have a 2.5g, 3g and 5g and all are doing pretty well. The betta I have had the longest is almost 4 1/2 years old. All tanks are filtered and heated since remember bettas like warm water. I wish you luck hope this helps also variation in food helps too. Brine shrimp, betta flakes, bloodworms and a once a week fast. Just saw the pics above. Awesome and he looks very happy...keeping him by himself will be less stressful for him and for you. Great job looks great!
