Here is a link to some comments made a few years ago by the owner of the LFS we affectionately refer to as "the fish nazis". They are quite rude ever since we returned a Gourami that brought disease to our tanks. On subsequent visits we have seen them treating.. this was another cue not to shop here again.. BUT looking at his comments. I see he is barely literate and kind of a jerk.. Here are some excerpts (he is "exodon" in the posts above):
regarding piranha, which are often kept successfully but admittedly a challenge:

"85% of the people who ask me for pirahna I can stereotype before they ask. As a business....I protect my hobby by protecting PIRAHNA.. from these idiots. Not for sale."

"I tend to find embarrasment is an effective tool for those customers who just aren't getting it.
Try making a serious issue of their water test. Give them the "eye" when you present them with a 2.6 ppm reading on the ammonia ( NH3 ) chart. People tend to pay attention when a. under peer pressure
b. when its costing them."

He tried to pull this second thing on us, but we had tested prior to giving him the water. We also tested after returning home.. There was no Ammonia. This is a tactic he seems to use to put pressure on people to listen to his often misinformed advice.

Such as the real gem of not doing water changes often (and small ones if any) during a fishy cycle?

I understand he wants to educate the average consumer/hobbyist, but I prefer fish stores that offer constructive criticism and information to back it up. Not fish stores that tell us our water quality is poor when it isn't, and advise us to torture our fish with ammonia and nitrite during the cycle..

They also said our fish tank had only "cycled a bit" because it had only been 2 or 3 weeks since we had cycled.. In fact we used established filter media as well as plants and had no ammonia or nitrite at all a week after adding the established media (about 2 weeks into the cycle, for a total of 3 weeks to cycle.) Although adding a fish could cause the tank to undergo a minicycle, we ruled this out. In the end the disease issues were exascerbated by a poorly built heater that was replaced.

This is also the fish store that sold us some strange green plant and told us it was java moss when in fact it is not. Luckily there are several reputable dealers around here. One of whom sold us some real java moss at a great price and always gathers around us and shows off the fish and the wares for us when we arrive. That is real customer service.. This guy didn't even know if he had certain fish anymore.. oh yah i think so.. in one of these tanks.. maybe..
jeez. I like supporting local businesses but proselytizing us for not following bad advice, and lying to us as well as overcharging is not the way to get return business!
