poor flow through Whisper power filter

My tanks heavily planted so without the prefilters I end up with plant matter getting sucked up, not that my baskets 'pop' after two weeks, just like keeping the media clean before it starts pumping out nitrates(habit from SW tanks) so with 2 AC's on the tanks every other week one was getting cleaned. But now its every couple months since not much gets by the prefilters.

I didn't change very often before, it's only within the last 6 months or so that I've noticed it having poor flow. I think the filter is just going bad, either the motor or impeller.

Anyways, I was looking at Aquaclear filters. It's a 3-stage filter with foam, carbon, and biomax(?) filter, whereas my old power filter only had a biobag for carbon and a foam filter. I basically ended up never adding carbon beyond the few pkts that came with the filter, as I read it's not really necessary and a good way for companies to make $$, so ended up using them as straight filters. Never noticed any issues with fish over the last 8 years doing so, though I only stock hardy fish types. Do people change the carbon/biobag in the Aquaclear filters regularly, or don't bother?

I never bother running the carbon, for water polishing I just use purigen, $8 one time price and you can keep using it forever just have to 'recharge' it every couple months. Biomax you just swish around once in awhile in a bucket off old tank water.

no carbon in any of my filters, just sponge, biomax, and polyester batting for fine particle filtration.
