I couldn't figure out what was happening to my S. lucipinnis, they just seemed to evaporate out of a covered tank. Then one day I found one dried out on the glass cover. Apparently they like to swim up the outflow of hob filters, and weren't making the return trip to the tank successfully. I suspect the MIA's hit the floor, and were eaten by the dog. I never found any catfish jerky on the floor, just the one on the glass cover. I moved a 4' strip light from another tank to the top of the 55 they were in, (covered the openings between the lids and the plastic strip) and the unexplained disappearances stopped. My glass covers have the plastic strip too, that alone wasn't enough to keep them confined.
