If heard of the disease before but I have no idea what the syptoms are or what causes it. One of my Black neons was resting on a leaf last night with rapid breathing and bulging eyes. When I fed the fish he didnt eat. He was still alive this morning when I turned on the light but he still seems sick. Any suggestions?

Melafix had it cleared up on one of my platies in about 3 or 4 days. I didn't notice any rapid breathing or anything, just had bulging eyes that were a cloudy - looked like they had a slime coating.

Dang, now is one of those times when i wish i had room for a quarantine tank, but i dont... At least it doesnt sound too serious, asnd it doesnt seem like something that would spread, so ill keep an eye on it (no pun intended) for the next few days and if it gets worse ill probably have to flush it:( since i dont want to treat the entire tank. Thanks for the help.:)

How big is this tank? Flushing a fish because of pop eye doesn't sound right... this is an easy fix. You could probably treat the whole tank w/o removing any other fish - salt or Melafix won't harm a thing (except pop eye)

All you have to do is add salt or any kind of fungus/bacterial meds

Often Dignified, doesn't it matter what other kinds of fish he has before you add salt? I've read that if you have scaleless fish in the tank, like plecos or cories that you should never add salt.

Before you treat it with salt do a few searches on google about adding salt to the types of fish you have. I'd hate to have the cure for one fish harm other uninfected fish.

p.s. What about a salt water dip? I've read about heavily salting a bucket of water and putting the infected fish in the bucket up to but NOT a moment longer than 5 minutes. Wouldn't that work just as well?

Well yea it depends on his other fish of course... on the dosing directions of a medication, it will list what fish is it compatible with. If he has all tetras, I wouldn't bother will putting out the non-pop eye ones since he doesn't have a q-tank.

I just used Maracyn 2 to successfuly treat popeye. Of course there can be numerous causes for popeye but that was a good general med that seemed to do the trick. Make sure which ever med you choose to follow instructions exactly. And like most meds do the whole treatment and not until you don't see the popeye any more.

As for salt, it is great and medicinal levels won't be a harm to cories at least.

I understand where you're coming from, but I wanted to keep the death count at zero, and keep my "record" going for no fish deaths....It doesnt matter, I woke up this morning and he was dead, so I gave him the swirly flushy porcelain grave. *sigh* oh well.

I hope that you aren't flushing live fish. Nothing like a horrid death in a septic system.

It is my feeling anyway that once a bacterial infection hits one fish it is probably already in the tank. So treatment is for the good of the whole tank.

But hey you do what you feel you have to and I will just have to pity your fish tank and hope that none of your fish get sick.
