Porcupine Puffer not eating.

:sad :sad
Sorry to hear that.

I'm planning to buy one shortly for a 250gal tank, from the reseach
that i have been looking at, just about every site says PP puffers
should be eating straight away when introduced into the tank unless
the have a parasite.
Most shops that i have seen them in always seem to be in a bad state.
either very cloudy eyes or just lying on the floor looking sad.
shame really, such nice fish !
Puffers always get the raw deal !
one big name store near me in Leeds ( better not name it )
had some freshwater puffers, brackish puffers and a porupine.
All looking like half dead, over-stocked and diseased.

It really p****d me off, so i complained and they didn't give a toss.

I wont go there again !

yeah, theres one by me thats the same way. Lots of really unique and cool fish... Halfass taken care of of course. gr. burns me up.

Medications that treat for external parasites won't work for internal parasites. You either need to get the medicated food or get the stuff that you can soak the food in. Sorry to hear about your puff :sad It's so easy to fall in love with a porc.

OH NO!!! I am so sorry to hear about your baby!! I know I was in love with mine and when he finally passed away, just of old age I guess, I was heartbroken. I made him a tombstone and everything and buried him in my flowerbed. Stupid, I know, but he was like a cat to me.

Puffers do fine with copper treatment , My puffer has been with me for about a year and in that time he got sick twice on me and copper always worked for him. What I do is as soon as my fish start acting strange I drop them in my 10 gallon quarantine tank for a month with copper and about 95% of the time they get well.

I used that. I like jungle products. I have better results than most of the other stuff I've purchased. It says it Quickly clears external and internal parasites. Not quick enough I guess. Anyway. Thanks guys. I didn't really have much time to get attached, its always hard to see a fish die of course. I'd never experinced parasites before. I've read about it, but by the time he showed physical signs, it was too late. Sucks, but life goes on, I am going to persue another pp puffer. Not any time soon, but I will. I've had kept my other puffers happy and alive for a while now. Anyway, I really need to get back to work.

Thanks everyone.

Well, I hate to break it to you all, but it's people like us who keep these fish shops in business...I used to work in one along time ago. 25% or so of the fish came in dead in the bags and more died during acclimation, and I became disgusted. That is why I stopped keeping fish the last 10 yrs. But I caved in recently (someone gave me a free tank) and decided to keep some african cichlets because they at least are freshwaterand easy to breed, thus, most likely, my fish weren't taken from the wild.

I think those of us who do keep salt tanks should have the goal of breeding so to minimize the impact on the remaining reefs. A lot of those fish are caught by detonanting cyanide bombs, especially in the Phillipines, that stun the fish, and many don't survive. Even the ones that make it to the LFS usually die within two weeks. And then to see places like Petsmart mass deliver these poor creatures is sickening because I know they are simply looking at $$ figures and don't really care about the creatures themselves. They should be outlawed.

I too have a great love and desire for marine tanks, but too many creatures die during our "learning curve" or while we learn to try to mimick their ecosystem. ANY kind of stress can lower a fish's immune system, and that is when parasites or any other detrimental conditions can invade their bodies and prevail.

I know there are several sides to the argument.... some believe that this is a way to raise awareness amongst hobbyists and their friends but my response is how many people that become 'aware' actually do something to help preserve reefs?

My opinion is that inverts and wild fish should stay in their home. We support a market that would be non-existant without our support. Anyways, just thought I'd shed some light as to why many fish die shortly after purchase.
