I am looking to make a more "permanent" filter pad for my canister filters. I noticed that Swiss Tropicals sells 1.5" (38mm) poret foam at a density of 45 ppi. Does anyone know how this would compare to Polyester Quilt Batting?

Quilt batting would generally be used to polish the water and will have a very high density.. i.e nothing much would pass through.

Poret foam will have lower density, so using a graduation will allow your mechanical filtration to work throughout it, and have the water go through large then ever decreasing pore size, so it will allow flow for longer, and require less frequent cleaning too.

I believe there are bacterial benefits too, even if you just rinse and reuse the batting.

Batting is much cheaper though.

I think Poret foam is a buy once and done purchase. The stuff seems to last forever. Quilt batting eventually needs to get tossed.

I think it is possible to clean and reuse filter batting.

It is just a lot of work, far easier to just dump and replace, and cheap enough to do so.

Think about the filter cartridges for the simpler HoB filters.

I have used batting in some canisters & yes, I rinsed at least several times before replacing it (before I lived in a drought state). I've mostly used Rena cans but now have a Fluval. Coarse, medium & fine sponges plus a batting-like pad. I'm not sure of the densities.

If it's too fine, the filter clogs pretty quickly I don't want to have to tear them down more than every few months...That's why I used HOBs & floss or batting as needed (and always sponges too) on most tanks even with canister secondary filter. I find them much easier & faster to clean than canisters. I use cans as mainly for biologic & coarse filtration.

45 PPI Poret will clog pretty quickly. I'd be tempted to go with 30, which is what I've done with my canisters. You might send Swiss Tropicals an email asking Stephan Tanner what he recommends.
