Males have a gonopodium

The "gonopodium" is one of their manly fins on the bottom part of their body, correct?

Looking at pics online, it seems that the females have an extra bottom fin and the males don't.

I've been thinking about getting a few Platy and I either want to get two for my 10 gallon or get one female and keep one of the babies. You could do it that way and get the enjoyment of being able to raise and keep the fish and save some money in the process. That is pretty much up to you. Don't over stuff your tank with fish though. Feed some, sell some, and keep little.

to keep platys and breed them, I would need to return the 2 rasboras that I am currently cycling my tank with, right?
