Was just googling stuff on various shellies and their tank size requirements, I know I need a 10 gal at the very least for a pair of multies, so I thought maybe a 5gal with a footprint of a 10 (essentially a 10gal cut in half, glasscages has them) sometimes used for fragging by sw people, would be sufficient enough for a pair of multies, since they don't use the top half of the tank either way. I've got an in wall shelf that would fit one nicely.

The question is, would this be fine for them?

i would say to go with a 10 gal. tank, everyone says that apistos stay on the bottom but mine is always at the top...in short, go with a 10 gal and be done with it.

Yeah I've heard that about apistos, as well as rams (and my brother's rams swim all over the tank), but from what I've seen at the breeder and my lfs is that multies, like most other shell dwellers, stay really close to the shells on the bottom, they didn't even come up to the top when the breeder was feeding them and his colony is in a 120 with cyps. A height/water volume vs footprint situation is why I was asking.

Basically I want a tank with at least a pair of multies, but I don't want it to look bare in the mid and top levels, since in a tank that size I'm pretty much restricted to a one specie.

Yeah Multi's will spawn in a water puddle so yes i would do it the footprint is fine and dude i love glasscages.com i want to drive up to them and get one of those 33gal longs and its like what your talking about the five cut in half the 33gal long is like a 55gal cut in half hehehe..

At any rate multi's do stay close to their shell and only come to the top for feedings in a small setup as for something bigger like my 120gal they never ventured off the sand to feed due to predation..

I say go for it - do about an inch of sand and add like 6 whale eye shells let me know if you need any whale eyes i have extras..

Yeah, go for it ibr3ak! IMO, a pair will be fine there. Later, you will have so many fry that the tank will be overcrowded and maybe you will end with another tank for them; since the Multis apparently are addictive. I'm planning to have a 20H Multi setup no later than next Christmas. Good luck with them, my friend!

Yeah i have a friend here local who breeds them in one of those five gallon SW complete nano systems and he is always getting rid of fry and juvies..

Ok well, no go for glasscages, the tank is $20, but the quoted shipping would have been around $25 if not more for a heavier glass tank. So my brother picked up a 10 gal tank for me a few days ago and I had a go at cutting it today, alls good, just have to silicone the top frame to make it look a little better. In the end I decided to add a quarter inch to the height so that the top frame wont cover it too much (plus about a quarter of an inch covered by the bottom frame), came out to 20" x 10" x 6.5", will post a pic when I'm done with it.

BTW Pit thanks for the offer on those shells, I might just take you up on it :)
