look around the seams for leaks. Move your filter to the front of the tank and check if it leaks while running. make sure water isint splashing out.
I am paranoid about this also. Sometimes I just want to frame a plasma up and run one of those aquarium screen savers. What can you do about a disaster like that. I always wonder what happened if a seam popped a leak or is a filter tube came loose. Now I am going tobe up all night on water watch! Thanks alot !

its not any fun if you are worring all the time it hardly ever happens and usually it is minor if it does.

what size tank what kind of fish etc need more info than that
my oscars constantly splash water out of there tank even with a lid they still find ways of doing it i think just so i come entertain then and make weird faces trying to locate leaks so i just watched them for awhile and sure as rain in seattle they were scrapping and splashing and my one oscar litterally just spat water at the lid

if it's an Aquaclear filter - grab a flashlight and look into the filter. The filter media has a habit of becoming buoyant and rising up inside the filter body, raising the water level and creating a trickle leak down the back of the filter. My solution for this, remove the annoying useless basket, and drop the media directly into the filter body. That way you gain a bit of room, and instead of the buoyant media, which in mine is the carbon, lifting everything, it only lifts itself and the ceramic media leaving ample space between it and the foam for the incoming waterflow.
make sure your filter is tipped slightly towards the aquarium.
if the back is tilted away this leads to possible over flows out the back of the filter. a slight tilt toward the aquarium allows water to escape back into the tank.
most HOB's(if this is what you have) are designed to allow overflow to run back in past the pick up tube ..this is negated if the filter is tilted the wrong way and the back of the filter is lower than the overflow.
this will eliminate the filter.
can you see water on the glass? near the seams?
i have a 20 that has a slight leak if the tank is filled to the brim..not recommended. as long as the water is 1/4" from the lip it stays dry.
