So I was thinking that after I move in a coype of months I would like to start a salt water tank. But in the beginning I am really interested in an invert only tank with live rock. In a smaller tank (5-10 gallons) would a powerhead for water movement and LR be enough for filtration (with water changes of course). Also where can I find a good web resource for info on keep inverts, specifically crabs and what size tanks they need. Thanks.

What kind of crabs are you thinking about? Many are very easy to keep, but there is a lot of diversity out there, and I can't think of a good, all-inclusive web site out there.

You can give wet web media a try for starters.

I hear great things about Fenner and Calfo's new invert book, but haven't had my hands on it yet.

Quite often when I go scuba diving around where I live I see some really neat crabs, maybe 3-4 inches wide, that have black shells with yellow dots on them. They seem like really cool crabs and i was going to try and see if I could find out what they are. I was looking at making the tank around a crab of that size, then add some hermits and snails. Crabs are always a ton of fun to wtch when I dive so I thought it would cool to just have a small tank with them in it.

Keep in mind that your local waters are not tropical, so you may need some means of keeping the temp. low.

Yes, I am all too aware of how cold it can get in the water around these parts :D . The temps seem to go from the high 30's to the low 60's F. I have been very succeful in tank placement keeping my white cloud minnow tank at around 70 F year round. And thanks to the fact that I spend most of my time in the basement it isn't too hard.
