Possible Parasite??? *Bichir* w/pics

I'd go to monsterfish.com and ask those guys. They have a lot of people that have birchirs that could help you.

well it doesnt matter now as i euthanized him. his "snout" was turning red as where his pec fins.

no to just find out what it was....

sorry for your loss, sounds like an infection that he had. keep an eye on tank mates and such.

Yeah, real sorry, man. That's tough, especially as you couldn't figure it out--strange looking. Take care. . ..

thanks. i signed up there and think we may have found it out... Hemorrhagic Septicemia.

now, what about my other fish? should i start a treatment on the tank with maracyn2 or not is the question...

unless they show symptoms no leave it alone-Anne

Thanks anne, for both posts :)

Wow, I've never seen that in a tropical aquarium fish.

I have howerever seen something very similar in walleye fry at the local fish hatchery. It can occour if they are stressed or if the water temp suddenly drops. What actually happens is the fish's body constricts the blood vessels to its tail end to preseve it's brain and vital organs. And yes, it makes almost a perfect line.

Perhaps something similar is goin on with your Bichir. Unfortunatly, i can suggest no course of action.

hemorragic septicemia I beleive can be either a viral or bacterial infection..I can't say which is more common..the only course of treatment I have heard of is maracyn II.
if it is viral any antibiotic treatment will most likely not help.
FYI, if it is hemorragic septicemia..it is contageous..since you removed your birchir..keep an eye on the rest of the inhabitants.

good luck
