Well, there's a LFS getting ready to open in a town nearby (moved from a different location). I talked to the owner through email and he said they won't be selling fish for a couple months after they open to get the tanks cycled. His policy for quarantine is a minimum of 3 of days for absolute best supplier he has (one he claims has never sent a sick fish), up to 3 weeks. He also wants all his customers to bring a water sample before any fish purchase.

So, does it sound good to you guys? I don't have a lot of experience with LFS, I've been mostly stuck with petsmart.

Sounds good, but it also sounds like he is painting himself into a corner with the whole bringing in your tank water or he wont sell you a fish.

sounds like he's covering his butt to keep from having to replace a dead fish if he knows your waters bad

Sounds like at least a knowledgeable owner. I'd fully expect his policies to change over time just based on business needs, but otherwise it sounds like it will be kept well.

I'm not sure how strict that policy is, but I remember coming across the website for the store a while back when it was in it's old location and seeing it posted on the main page, so he's been doing it for a while.

I like the store owners thinking, but the water sample thing won't hold for long.

if he doesnt have a good guarantee (like 14 days), then you may want to look elsewhere and use this LFS as a "backup"

heh, forgot to ask about the return policy. Oh well, I'll remember if I'm getting ready to buy a fish there, I'm always paranoid about whether a new fish will make it or not.

He sounds better than any LFS around here. None of ours quarenteen fish or require a water sample before purchase. He'll certianly lose walk in business with that policy. I assume he would drop that for customers he knows. The best return policy in my area is 48 hours.

it certainly saves him the headache of selling to *newbies*.

"do you have a water sample with you today?"
"nah, i just bought the tank, it's in the back of my truck. i wanted to put some fish in it tonight when i get home."
