EcoPit - I'm with your wife, I like the Eleocharis montevidensis, too. That variety isn't listed on Tropica. It's probably higher light, though? Your hygro is stunning.

I have fish tanks with plants. I like my plants but not so much as to have to "work" on them. I have low light, no CO2 and slow growth... so here some are, so far, they're all common ones, too:

My 55

I recently set up a 55, my first real planted aquarium. I put in some "frill?", some bacopa monieri, purple waffle, and some anachris. It still looked a bit bare, but the local shops are pretty scarce when it comes to plants. I decided to try out some local flora for my tank, so grabbed some ground cover and "grass" from a local swamp, and some monstroud bushy plant from a stream. Hopefully I can keep them alive long enough for them to get a foot hold. The purple waffle was a gift from my folks, and I know it is a terrestrial plant. For some reason though, it is rooting in and putting out new shoots, very curious.

Here's my whole tank, complete with my DIY CF lighting.

Here are the three plants I found today locally. The big bush in the back and the grass seem to be in excellent shape, while the groundcover seems to be a little withered (no sun to speak of in over a week).

oh my goodness all of your plants look so well! all i have now are anacharis...snails took over cabomba. i prob. need waaay better lighting and what is this Co2? what all does it do and how does it help your plants? i'd really love to venture out into more types but i need to buy that plant substrate that's kinda like echo-complete or w/e.

There are some plants that are still adjusting, like the L. Cuba. But everything is growing nicely.

Co2 depends on the kind of lighting that you have. You have a low light setup with low light plants, so you don't have to worry about co2. If you decide to do it anyway (which some people have, and it doesn't hurt), you should check your kh to make sure that it's at least 3.

Most people start injecting co2 at 2 to 2.5 wpg. You definitely need it at 2.5.

Co2 at medium to high light levels will benefit your plants in that it helps the plants consume nutrients in the water column, giving algae very little chance to take over. The higher the light, the more co2, fertilization, and maintenance is needed.

For a beginner, I recommend medium light. You'll be able to grow a lot of plants with that setup, and be able to handle the maintenance.

Please do a search on lighting, co2, etc. Check out the stickies as well. You'll find lots of helpful information on the subject.

Oh, by the way, Eco-complete is not necessary in order to keep a planted tank. That stuff is expensive and not many people can afford it. I use regular black gravel, and have no issues with it at all. Actually, it looks a lot like eco-complete. But if you have the money, go ahead and splurge.
