I regularly test my planted tank for nitrates and posphates. Both of which are very high in the tap water. I usually do this to ensure that levels arent high enough to cause an algae outbreak. I control high levels by using posphate and nitrate removing media in my filter.

now that I am using co2 diffusion in my tank and plant growth has accelerated i am worried about the availability of the Macro nutients. What level is desirable for posphate, nitrate and potassium. Are potassium test kits available? I have never seen one. I have no idea what the potassium levels in my tank are.

My poshate levels are at 0.25ppm nitrate is dropping at 5.0ppm. Are thes levels too high? I ask because I am in the middle ( I hope ) of an algae outbreak. Dark green fast growing and apparently inedible to both my Ottocinclus and SAE. any info will be welcome. Thanks

I try to keep my Phophate around 1.0 ppm and my Nitrate at 10ppm. A 10 to 1 ratio is usually recommended. I don't think there are any good potassium test kits (that are affordable ) but it is hard to overdose potassium. I dose about 1/8 teaspoon everyother day on my 55.
