Potter's Angel

I have a maroon clown (pretty aggressive fish) and had a potters angel for close to 2 years living just fine in my tank. Unfortunately where I live we had a bad heatwave last summer that lasted over a week and I couldn't keep my tank cool enough. My only fish I lost was the Potters Angel but I lost 75% of my corals which was a very expensive loss. When I bought my Potters my LFS had not really heard of them and just got a couple in to see if people liked them. They cost $30 at the time.. now that my LFS is seeing a huge demand for Potters he has raised the price to $75. I decided to go with a Pygmy to replace the Potter due to the price difference but I think the Potters Angel is by far the best looking Angel out there.

does anyone think a Potter Angel would stress out a Firefish? even if they are the only two fish

I think any fish, even a watchman goby, would stress out a firefish. They are very timid. Just walking by the tank will make them dart into a hole. I have never personally seen a firefish live more than 6 months and my only attempt at a firefish lasted less than 10 minutes.. he went right towards my button coral, got stung, and was dead. They are cool fish and in the right environment will probably live a while (like a seahorse tank must be for seahorses/pipefish only) I believe a firefish needs to be in the right tank. Either a very big reef tank with lots of hiding places or in a tank with other firefish. Even though the potters is pretty calm itself, just to mere fact of it swimming near a firefish will spook it into a hole. That's my experience anyway. Maybe others have a better experience that can share.

IME, firefish aren't THAT timid, i've only had two so that's not a whole lot of experience. but mines in with a o clown, blue damsel, and a velvet damsel and he's out and about quite a bit. save for when i'm doing maintanence he's usually pretty bold except at feeding which i would think would be the only problem.

hmmm interesting. my firefish is my only fish at the moment, but he's out swimming around constantly. He seems very healthy and strong. He doesn't dart to his cave when he sees me. in fact, if he's not out swimming the second he sees me he comes zooming out of his cave.

Maybe I'll just get a clownfish and two Banji Cardinals and have a very calm community tank. I dont want to stress anyone out. I want to enjoy my fish and have them be as happy as they can be. I don't want to kill anyone, that's not why i'm into fish keeping. :)

Sounds great IMO. Firefish are timid but they aren't so fragile that the slightest thing can kill them. If you provide a safe environment with non-boisterious tankmates it should be fine really.

clown gobys would do REALLY well with a single firefire.

I had a clown goby for several months, but I could never him fat to get rid of the "sinking stomach". He ate a couple times each day and a variety of foods and i couldn't keep him alive. They usually perch on SPS corals such as Acroporas and Montipors b/c they feed off it or something like that. I don't think these are necessary, but make sure when you buy the goby, that is has a filled stomach. it should do well with a firefish.

:hi: HERE! HERE! I had potters before.

I'll just tell you from personal experience. YES, I agree with person above who said they're little bit harder to keep than flame or coral beauty. I must tell you though that this is only based on my personal experience, so just hear it as a reference. It may not be true for all potters out there. I've kept all three dwarf angels (potters, flame, coral beauty) at different times. Potters did show very active feeding behavior at the fish store as well as at my house. But at times, I felt like he was little picky with its food. One day, he would eat the pallets, but another day he wouldn't. One day, he would eat the mysis, but another day he wouldn't. But it always accepted the frozen angels formula cube (made out of sponge and stuff) without trouble. The only other thing was that it was very shy compared to the other angels. I provided a lot of hiding spaces with live rocks, and I literally could barely see him once or twice a day when I fed him. But then again, this could just be this specific fish I had. Even same specie can have different personalities.

I've got to tell you though... what a beautiful fish. Stunning under good lighting when he moves in and out of the rocks. They're also little bit more rare than coral beauty and flame. At my LFS, they always go for about $10 more than flame.

are dwarf angels like the the flame, bicolor, ect ect invert safe?
