Power filter question...

Whats the advantage/disadvantage to using a filter larger then what you need? If you fall close to the requirements does it even matter? Like buying a Power filter rated for a 50 gallon tank if you have a 55 gallon? Or do you just go to the next size which would be for a 75 gallon tank which seems like a huge overkill? Is there such a thing as overfiltering? My tank is already way understocked, I dont even have any algae growth, but my old filter looks like its conking out on me, so I need a replacement. And I dont want to overfilter, if thats even possible. But I dont want to risk going to the 50 gallon and risk underfiltering.

Any thoughts?

In most cases you can never over filter your tank.I would get the next size up a least.

a filter rated for a 75G, run on a 55G is Not huge overkill at all.many would recomend it.
Underfilterring can be a problem. Over filterring ,within reason, isnt a problem 75 on 55 is well within reason.

I'd go no less than a 75G filter for 55G.

There is no such thing as over filtering, as long as it dont make you water overly turbulent, and some fish even like a little turbulence. Over filtering is sort of like having too much fun, no such thing.
