Power filter Vs. Canister filter

I prefer RUGF and canisters.

Canisters are hard to beat for versatility of media.

Media costs are very low. Plastic pot scrubbers and poly fibre matting, etc.

I do have noodles as well, last forever... etc.

Even though I have never had a canister, I have heard that they are some of the best filters, but they are more expensive. I think a power filter can work on a 20 gallon tank without a problem. There are some advantages and disadvantages of both the Aquaclear and Penguin/Emperor filters. The Aquaclear allows you to store more media, but does not have as good of biofilteration as the Penguin/Emperor. The Penguin/Emperor filter has better biofilteration because of the biowheel, but if the biowheel stops operating, then most if not all of your biofilteration is lost. These are just a couple of the advantages and disadvantages of these two filters. Hope it helps!

It is all a matter of personal preferance. For a 20 gallon tank, a great HOB filter are those in the aquaclear series such as the aquaclear 50. If you want a planted tank, then a canister filter is probably the better option. I would suggest the eheim 2213 in that case. Really it is all about what you really want out of the filter and the kind of setup you plan to maintain in your aquarium.

it's overkill, but I run an eheim 2213 on my 20gallon, which has about 16 gallons of water in it. I like it because it's truely silent, has a great flow rate, and because I can route the intake and return where I want them in the tank, rather than next to each other like an HOB. to me, it was well worth the added expense. If I could, I would always use a canister.

i'd go with a penguin 200/emperor 280, depending on your budget. can't beat the biowheel. i have a penguin 200 and a fluval 104 on my 29 gallon, and honestly the fluval is just more trouble IMHO, and the penguin seems to pump out a lot more.

I use a Mag 350 on my 29 to drive an RUGF.

new 90gal set up

:)Hi all, I just upgraded 2-1/2 weeks from 30 gal to 90 gal and I currently have an aquaclear 30,aquaclear 70 as my fitering for the tank. Does this seem alright? I also have my diatom D1 which I run for about 6-8 hours every 2months and probably every month on the 90 being alot bigger than 30. any advice would be appreciated.
