Power Heads, which one?

Hi folks,

I'm interested in buying a powerhead for my 55 gal freshwater, but with so many to choose from I'm not sure which one to get!

I currently have a Top Fin 60 (dual OTB) filter and I do not use an undergravel filter system. The tank is rather understocked at the moment with 12 small tetras, 3 small barbs and a red tail shark and I've been reading how some fish (like the shark) prefer currents, which is why I'm considering adding a power head (they're pretty cheap too!) not to mention the current would help with aeration / filtration. I often notice a few of the tetras like to get into the current created by the OTB filter, and I was thinking a power head on the other end of the tank would be enjoyable for them.

Any thoughts? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Erik.

An Aqua Clear 301 might be just what you're looking for. They're made by Hagen, and are my favorite powerheads for reliablilty and ease of maintenence.

..and remember, there's no such thing as "understocked" for hobby fish. :D

Power Heads

Thanks Ras,

I checked a few out on-line and I'm thinking of going with a slightly larger model, the Aqua Clear 402 (for tanks up to 50 gal, max flow 270 gph). I especially like the fact you can buy replacement parts if eventually needed!

Thanks,

Erik.

I too am thinking of purchasing a powerhead for my 55g tank for improved circulation. I will be housing one or two slightly larger species (piranha, green terror or gar). E-Bay has reasonably priced powerheads with bio-filter attachments...am considering a Sonic 528gph powerhead. Check FW thread soon as I will be posting a question of similar nature.
