Hey,

I have a 55 gal that is currently at the beginning of the one month cycle b4 putting fish in it. I have a Hydor/Proquatics Bravo 200 that I am happy with, but I am unable to find replacement catridges for it. So before i rush out and buy another filter i was wondering about canisters. Can somebody tell me how the intake the water from your tank. Most of the reason i would like to upgrade to the canister is to cut down on plastic in the tank! I know they are more expensive but i would willingly pay that extra $ for a better looking tank. also do the canisters have any other advantages to a power filter? thanks in advance :help:

The main benefits that I enjoy in a canister over a conventional HOB filter are:

-More media space
-Customization of input/output locations
-Less visible clutter within the tank
-Less space required behind the tank

The few drawbacks over the HOBs are:

-Harder to clean out the plumbing (hoses) on canisters than most HOBs
-Canisters tend to cost more

Overall I like cannister filters quite a bit. I run them w/ and in place of HOBs, but I still have tanks that use HOB filters. Both get the job done, imo; the key differences for me are listed above.

Both canister filters and hang on back filters add only a small plastic pipe into the aquarium. Canister filters actually add two, the intake and the output. Both are good, Both will do well for you. Canister filter needs to be cleaned less often and has more room for bacteria to grow. Hang on backs need the media to be rinsed more often but instead of taking apart the filter like with a canister, u just pull out the basket. I have both an eheim canister and an aquaclear hang on back. I like them both a lot.

See I like to use them for different reasons, I like using the bigger aquaclears for mechanical filtration, using only sponges and floss in them. Then use the canister for biological filtration only (prefilter the input tube though!!) Because the canisters give a lot more room for bio media I like to take advantage of it, and I dont like having to open up the canister to clean it, and the AC is WAY eaiser to clean.

Good luck deciding.
