Powerhead and HOB or not

Hello, I am just wondering if it would be good or not to just use my 2 powerhead units and stop with the HOB filter. The reason I ask is my fiancee hates the sound of the water running all the time from it. I at the moment have 2 Penguin 660R's with my UGF and a Aqua-Tech 10-20g HOB. I was thinking about just running one of the power heads reversed and the other normal. I know I would then need to plug one of the holes on the UGF. Would something like this work? Would the RUGF still work as good or not considering it would only be using 1 powerhead? Also would the other powerhead be able to filter like the HOB does. I bought the 660R's with the large prefilter sponges if that matter. Thanks

would need to know more about your setup. But in most cases you can run an UGF without a hob and keep a nice looking tank. I would not change it to a RUGF now though as this not needed. Everything depends on tank size, stock anf feeding habbits. It may need larger and/or more fequent water changes. Do you have the air tubing that came with the PH? if so use it to help aireate the water.

Raise the water level and it should stop the "running water" sound, if not the filter you are using is quite poorly designed.

BTW, he posted a link to his tank specs in his signature, very overstocked, there is no way you can take either one of those filters off without having some very bad results(amonia/nitrite poisoning).

I agree with dorkfish.

Tell your gf that you'll make the tank quieter if she buys you a 75g for those two kissers and the bala. That's what they are going to need as adults and once they get a bit bigger, they'll probably start killing your other fish.

Hello, thanks for the replies. Roy I already have the unit setup as a RUGF. The 2 tubes are being used right now for the reversed powerhads so I can't add the ridged airlines. Dorkfish I have the water level up to the black trim line on the tank. It is a $20 HOB filter form Wal-Mart. It seems to keep the water clean but the trickling water just bugs the heck out of her. Roan I do know I need to get a bigger tank and I do plan on it within a few months. I am new to the hobby and when I bought the fish I was told "They will be fine in that tank but you will need a bigger one down the road" I wish I had known that they would grow very large when I bought them. I don't want to just give them back as that seems very wrong to me so I will just give them a better home hopefully soon.

As for my tank being overstocked, my levels seem to hold pretty good. The fish are not aggresive twords the others at the moment and all the fish seem to be pretty happy right now. I only started using the RUGF system within the last week. Before that all I had was the HOB and an air rock and the water was still pretty clean. I do water changes everyweek about 25-50%. Again I do know now I will need to get a larger tank in the near future. I plan to try and get a 129g system as I really like the fish and they are very relaxing to just sit and watch.

I ditto the AC..rfug is a good system but there still needs to be a way to get some of the solids out of the water... rfug with a power filter(HOB) is a good set up.
if you have a petsmart in the area..print the [rices..they usually are cheaper on line and they price match.
