powerhead instead of mechanical filter?

My mechanical filter constantly eats the moss in my tank. If the tank is moderataly planted, can I eliminate the filter altogether and just put in a powerhead for circulation?

If you have fish in your tank, I would address the moss issue and keep a filter.

Try a sponge over the intake. I use part of an Aquaclear filter sponge on some tanks.

Thanks for the suggestions. I know the fish are the culprits, they rip through the moss and the marimo like presents on christmas morning. - I will try the sponge idea.

Yes you probably want to keep the mechanical filtration unit running. It helps remove debris, organics and other stuff that a powerhead would only circulate in the tank. If you were to use a powerhead only setup, make sure you do more routine waterchanges to make up for the lack of mechanical filtration.
