Powerhead Question

Hi all,

I have a 75g with a rena xp3. The side opposite of the flowback seems to be pretty dead, water movement wise. If I were to employ a powerhead, how exactly do they work? Do they need to attach to the filter somehow, or do they run on their own, pulling water from the tank and immediately sending it back in? I looked around at Petsmart, but none of the boxes really explained how they worked (most had pictures of attaching them to UG filters). Anyway, just looking for some education before I drop some $$. Thanks!

They can hang from a bracket or be suctioned cupped to the interior. Put a sponge filter on the intake and direct the output to the area of concern.

I had a problem with surface film on top of the tank and since I was using a filter with a spray bar, there was no enough surface agitation. I used the smallest powerhead I could find and mounted it using the suction cups provided on the other end of the tank.

I have a horizontal spray bar on the left side pointing slightly towards the inside wall of the tank and the gravel while the powerhead is pushing water up a bit in an angle to break water surface then moving water towards the spray bar.

its simple.. its just a unit that has one end sucking water and another blowing it out... obvioulsy the sucking end is a bit of a hazard so many have a screen attachment that comes with it.. you can also buy a foam or floss prefilter (but it has to be chnaged) and the output end is at your disposal... you can add stuff or just letit run as is...

positioning doesint matter.. but as long as you get mostly water and not to much air then your ok.. running a pump dry will cause lots of friction and make it "burn" out

so upright, upsidedown, sideways, dangling, shooting out the water here and there... its all up to you

Great! Thanks everyone...
