hi there. i have a 40 gallon wide tank and i'd like to get a decent little current going in there. can anyone suggest a brand and how much power you think i'd need to get the job done?

thanks a lot! :)

Penguin 660

40 gallon wide? do you mean long? If you want current...you may want to add some pvc pipe. run a piece the length of the aquarium with some elbows. Have the intake at one end and the output at the other. You can put the powerhead at one end - or a common water pump - so the water is sucked from one end and pushed from the other - coordinates your current a little better. In this scenario you will have to put your ph on the bottom of the tank so you can use a common water pump.

sounds intense, hopefully i can pull something like that off.

do i need to do anything if were to just buy a penguin 660?

also, perhaps a silly question, but would the Penguin 1140 powerhead be too much for my tank?

i dont want to send my fish flying all over the place...

hmmm flying fish...an interesting idea :) My suggestion was actually not a difficult solution. I have seen it brought up a couple of times with people wanting to create a river biotope. If a pump creates too much current one solution is to spread out the current, again using some kind of pvc, for example a piece of pvc with one input and 3 outputs, cuts the current in thirds and makes the fish really happy - also you do not need to give the fish parachutes :)

ditto rb's penguin 660 suggestion.

The 660 comes with hangar/suction cup options and a water deflector. all you need is in the box.

I would suggest the 660R which includes the sponge filter inlet...added bio-filtration and you can still use it as a normal powerhead. (plus it keeps small fishies and sand out of your impeller) These were about $18 at petsolutions recently.

:grinyes:

p.s. if buying only one or two 660R from petsolutions...shipping may be cheaper from their ebay store...it's a flat rate from their www site.

They ship promptly, too. I researched the 660R several times (I have 6 of 'em) and they always had the best deal.
