I want to add a bit more current to my planted tanks but not sure if powerheads are the solution. Are there brands that aren't noisy and expensive? Also does adding a powerhead or two also mean more maintenance? I'm just looking for something simple.

powerheads shouldnt make any noise if mounted correctly, and they should require minimal maintenance. Just clean the intake grating and the impeller every couple months. As for expensive, that depends on wether you believe $15-$20 is expensive.

ditto. powerheads are very low maintenance. clean the impeller every 6 months or so, pick deaqd plants off the intake grate...that's about it really.

Powerheads are great for adding current. I am particularly fond of the Marineland series, but Hagens have a good reputation, too. I bought a Rio once that died in about two weeks...

I have only used a few brands, most of mine are penguin due to versatility, and I never hear them at all unless I get air bubbles in them. Almost any powerhead out there will be silent when totally submersed. air cavitation is generally the only thing that makes them noisy.
