Someone suggested I add a powerhead to my tank to create current for my pleco. I have no idea how they work. Could someone please explain?? The only thing I have read is that they are used with an UGF. I don't have an UGF or don't plan to get one. Is that the only way to use a powerhed?

Powerhead can be used for many things. UGF and sponge filters are the most common in a FW tank. In a SW they are mainly used to create movement for different live stock. They are basically and impeller with in intake and an output. Water goes in one end, and out the other, and in the center is an impeller to move the water. So its kinda like a filter without all the media. Its up to you, if you want one. For Plecos they aren't really needed, but depending on the type it may help.

So if I decide to get one what size should I get? It would be for a 55g tank that has 2 Whisper 60 HOB filters. I don't know if that matters...anyway by size I mean GPH.
