Hi. I'm interested in purchasing some Prazi, but I can't seem to find someone who will ship to Canada. Does anybody know of a place? I have read also that, although much more expensive, you could use Droncit or Biltricide as an alternative. Is this true? I called several vets but none are willing to perscribe Droncit even for ornamental fish. Some even said that Droncit doesn't only contain Praziquantel, they said that it contains other active ingredients which may not be safe for fish.

Also, I've been doing some reading on Prazi and I have come across some contradicting information regarding the effects it has on the biological filter. Can someone who has actually used it please tell me what I can expect if I do use it on my aquarium based on their own experiences? For example, effects on biological filtration, plants, any cloudiness in water, necessity of any water changes, tips on dissolving the medication...

Thanks in advance!

I believe there is a link on the Goldfish Connection website regarding Canadian orders??
There is also Prazi offered for sale on Aquabid.

Doc Johnson over at Koi-Vet says droncit is fine- why not print out some info and take it with you to your veterinarian?

IME Prazi does not affect your biological bugs. It does cause a bit of cloudiness, as it is very resistant to dissolving. I put the dose in a bottle of tank water and shake vigorously before I add it to the aquarium and still it takes hours to settle out.

I have no plants in my goldfish tank so cannot comment on that.

I understand that the dosage instructions on the bottle can be modified a bit- a full dose on day one and another on day four.
I did a partial water change right before the second dose.

You can buy praziquantel in Canada from this place online: http://www.clarkekoi.com/ They sell an excellent praziquantel medication called Prazipond. Take a look at their online catalogue. Here is a link to some product info from the comapny that makes it: http://lymnozyme.com/products.html . This company
only makes two sizes which treat a few thousand gallons of water since it was designed for pond use, although it is just as effective in aquariums. It does have a shelf life of about five years so it should last you a while. I have used this product myself a couple of times and found that it does not have any negative effect on my biological filter and I did not find that it clouded my water. I have not used it with plants in the tank so I do not have any direct experience there. I have talked to the company that makes this product and they told me that it does not harm plants or filter. With this prazi medication you only need to treat once with no water changes in between the treatment time and no water changes needed after treatment. This prazi medication as well as all others as far as I know do not dissolve well in water. Tips on dissolving it are: shake strongly in a container of water and then pour the mixture in a small bucket of water and stir well. I have been told that it does not matter if it does not dissolve fully. With regards to Droncit, I have read the same information that Cearbhaill has, that it is safe to use. I have also read that it is more expensive per treatment than using prazi. I hope this helps.

Thanks very much for your responses. The cost of this med is pretty steep... any info on if it will come out for aquarium use and in smaller quantities?

I will see if I might be able to get my hands on some Biltricide. If that avenue fails as well then I'll probably place an order with Clarkekoi.

Thanks for your help!

Ya, I know what you mean about the price. I bought the smallest one and looked at it as an investment. Although I mostly likely will not use it all even in within five years. Where is Canada do you live? Maybe I can hook you up with a little if you like? PM me and let me know.

I have not heard anything on this brand coming out witha smaller size, sorry.

The Parasite Clear Tank Buddies by Jungle has Praziquantel listed as one of the ingredients. Wal-Mart is where I found them and they said they just started carrying it.

Goldfish Connection medicated foods are available to Canadian folks here.
I don't see Prazi on the list, but an inquiry might get you somewhere- worth a try.
The Prazi I get from GC is $15 US for 100 grams (3.5 oz)- not too bad? Lots less than 5 years worth of Pond Prazi.

It's still available on Aquabid as well...

Killy, I googled Parasite Clear Tank Buddies and found the active ingredients, Praziquantel wasn't among them. Unless the site I went to was wrong or maybe the product has changed... I will keep an eye out for it though.

Cearbhaill, I will give them a call, thanks very much for the link! $15.00 US sounds very reasonable for 100 grams!

Lukara, I called Jungle to see why my box of Parasite Clear had praziquantel listed as an active ingredient when it wasn't showing it listed as an ingredient on some websites. They told me that just within the last few months the formula had been changed to include praziquantel. Stores that don't move products as fast as others will still have the old product on their shelves. If under active ingredients it lists praziquantel first, then it is the "new" formula. Hope this helps!
