Pre-filtering Fluval 404..... Using Sand substrate

Im using biomax in the top 2 media trays. Should I still Use the carbon for the 2 bottom media trays? If not what would be best or most used filtering used for bottom 2?

I'd use regular foam for the first tray, (assuming that is the first tray after the intake) and then filter floss (quilt batting) in the second.

With the fluval water flows in thru the impeller then down the cannister thru 4 blocks of foam then up the canister thru the bottom tray then 3rd, 2nd 1st then it finally spits it back out to the tank

my concern is how it passes thru the impeller before it gets to the foam sponge. hope i didnt confuse anyone. :read:

Ah, now I see the confusion clearly. The impeller is on the output side on these filters. :) The inflow side has the primer tab and goes down into the sponges and then up the media baskets to the impeller.
